DIGITAL HERITAGE : DIGITAL SCULPTING, PROJECTION MAPPING AND BEYOND"

OBJECTIVE

The 2016 “Digital Heritage: Digital Sculpting, Projection Mapping and Beyond” aims to explore the tangible / intangible aspects of digital heritage conservation, and the utilisation of computer graphics technology to broaden the format of narrative and messaging of cultural heritage conservation. Digital sculpting and projection mapping will be the main technical aspects to explore narrative of digital heritage conservation for further protecting, educating and consolidating “building dwelling thinking” through digital heritage preservation.

BACKGROUND

Two ancient cities at the nodal points of Asia region on the Silk Road, Gandhāra (now Peshawar) and Heian-Kyō(now Kyoto), possess the great heritage of culture and religion. Kyoto's ancient name Heian-Kyō, "city as peace and tranquility", indicates the wish for poetic dwelling on the land. To-ji Temple, listed as one of the UNESCO world heritage sites at Kyoto since 1994, symbolizes the beginning of Esoteric Buddhism in Japan. It inherits the ancient wooden carpentry architecture code and civic engineering. Monk Kukai’s 3D Mandala at Lecture Hall in To-ji, not only includes the intangible deity-making techniques / tangible cultural heritage, but also represents the inter-cultural significance of religious art, graphic design and belief. To-ji Temple has luckily survived from natural disasters, political instabilities and World War II demolishment in Japan. Its conservation and sustainability become even more significant.

Gandhāra(now Peshawar), situated at the border between Afghanistan, Pakistan and China, has even earlier history of culture and business activities since 1AD. Findings of numerous deities and sculptures at various sites of Peshawar, Taxila, Swat, Hadda and Bamiyan further prove the inter-cultural influence of the era.
