The workshop integrates cross-disciplinary dialogues with Buddhist deity/textile/Chinese calligraphy and painting restoration, and digital heritage imaging. It aims to raise the awareness of traditional conservation techniques, non-intrusive restoration, and digital heritage imaging. It also strives to deepen students’ knowledge of the physical and technical aspects of Buddhist artworks. Participants will engage in presentation, discussion and interact with the speakers, faculty members as well as conservators on site in NYU Shanghai. The workshop takes advantage of the rare opportunity to witness the practitioners and their life work for Buddhist objects from all over Asia, and learn about issues surrounding conservation, interpretation, and digital imaging.
In addition to familiarizing participants to the exhibitions and the unparalleled collection at the Shanghai Museum, the workshop will introduce them to the practices of the world-class conservation lab. Students are expected to complete readings assigned before the workshop and to complete a research project based on an object/ objects studied in Digital Heritage or Digital Conservation of Buddhist Deities course. The program is open to Institute students specializing in Asian art or Buddhist art as well as those whose projects relate closely to the Buddhist art of Asia.

IT'S ABOUT TIME! Workshops in Time-based Media (TBM) Art Conservation
The Institute of Fine Arts (IFA) at New York University is an international leader in research and graduate teaching, and committed to global engagement and advancing the fields of art history, archaeology, and the theory and practice of conservation. Founded in 1960 as part of the IFA, the Conservation Center of the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU is the oldest degree-granting graduate program in art conservation in the United States. The Conservation Center offers a four-year, dual MA/MS graduate degree combining training in art conservation with historical, archaeological, curatorial, and scientific studies. The new specialty in Time-based Media Art Conservation was launched in January 2018. The It’s About Time! Workshops in Time-based Media (TBM) Art Conservation series is part of a project on Time-based Media Art Conservation Education and Training [PDF opens in new window] funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Dr. Hannelore Roemich, TBM Program Director and Professor of Conservation Science, and Christine Frohnert, Research Scholar and TBM Program Coordinator, at the Conservation Center, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.
Nicole Martin is the Senior Manager of Archives and Digital Systems at Human Rights Watch, where she established the organization's first digital archive. She holds a master’s degree in Moving Image Archiving and Preservation from New York University, and teaches Digital Preservation as an adjunct professor in the same program.

NYU IFA Graduate Research Workshop For the Study of Buddhist Art In Asia

Applicants are welcome to apply to the Graduate Research Workshop for the Study of Buddhist Art in Asia, jointly organized by the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU, Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington D.C.
This week-long workshop (Monday to Friday) foregrounds curatorial interpretation and display, technical art history, and digital humanities. It is intended to aid graduate students in developing sophisticated visual skills through close observation of and extended interaction with objects in a structured and guided environment. It also aims to deepen students’ knowledge of the physical and technical aspects of Buddhist artworks. Participants will engage in study, discussion and research with a small group of other students, faculty members as well as curators and conservators on site at the Freer and Sackler Galleries. Held in conjunction with the exhibition Encountering the Buddha: Art and Practice Across Asia opening this October, and the special exhibition Secrets of the Lacquer Buddha (December 2017 to June 2018), the workshop takes advantage of the rare opportunity to see Buddhist objects from all over Asia together in one place and learn about issues surrounding conservation, interpretation, and digital programming specific to this field.

Dates: May 21 (afternoon start) – May 25 (ends at noon), 2018
Location: Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington D.C. Class will meet for most of the time at the conservation lab.

Financial support: A transportation stipend, lodging and some meal support will be provided.

Digital Heritage and Narrative Workshop
Digital Heritage and Narrative workshop strive to explore the tangible/intangible aspects of digital heritage conservation. It further discusses collaborative opportunities to conduct the high-resolution site survey for scholars and institutions at local authorities. For preserving and making sustainable of the tangible cultural heritage, three-dimensional models, utilization of digital sculpting and other innovative perspectives are discussed. For extending the established results and making the digital resources available to broader audiences, the workshop further welcome researchers and projects relate to interactive info-motion interface and apply the knowledge of digital heritage to STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics). The workshop expects to bridge the platform for archeology, computer graphics, and interactive info-motion design. For further protecting, educating and consolidating “building dwelling thinking” through digital heritage preservation, the workshop helps to preserve the digital humanity, and reach out to museum staffs and academia. By the joint effort of global institutions and local authorities, the project will also help to foster and enhance the mutual understanding through intercultural collaborations.

Digital Workflow for Heritage Conservation
The Comité International de la Photogrammétrie Architecturale (English: “International Committee of Architectural Photogrammetry”). Over time, this committee gradually evolved into an organisation that applied technology from the measurement, the visualisation and the computer sciences for the benefit of recording, conserving and documenting cultural heritage in all its possible forms.

Digital Heritage and Innovative Collaborations” workshop aims to explore the tangible / intangible aspects of digital heritage conservation, and the utilization of computer graphics technology to broaden the format of narrative and messaging of cultural heritage conservation. Digital sculpting and projection mapping will be the main technical aspects to explore narrative of digital heritage conservation for further protecting, educating and consolidating “building dwelling thinking” through digital heritage preservation.

Art Talk On the “Journey to the West” : The Heart of Gandhara, Peshawar - Taxila -Swat
The heart of ancient Buddhist civilization — the ancient city of Gandhara, in nowadays Pakistan, is presented in a talk jointly organised by Hong Kong Silk Road Cultural Society, Art Serindia Ltd., Pakistan Culture Research Center-Tsinghua University and Pakistan-China Institute. Dr. Chen Wu-Wei also join the talk to share insights in digital heritage, cyber archiving, and a demonstration of photogrammetry work from the Gandhara Collections provided by Art Serindia.
遠古佛教文明中心 - 犍陀羅 ，即今日的巴基斯坦，在2016香港亞洲藝術週，由香港絲路文化協會、梵亞藝術、巴基斯坦文化研究中心、清華大學、中巴學院，共同舉辦的座談中，呈現其文化精隨。陳無畏博士亦於講座中，分享其對於數位文化遺產保育及數位文獻紀錄的觀點。並展示陳教授根據梵亞藝術所提供的犍陀羅典藏，所轉化而成的互動數位雕塑。

Digital Heritage : Digital Sculpting, Projection Mapping and Beyond
Gandhāra and Kyoto, two of the ancient cities at the nodal points of the Silk Road, symbolize the world heritage for culture, business and religion. To-ji temple for example, the temple listed as one of the UNESCO world heritage sites at Kyoto, Japan, symbolizes the beginning of Esoteric Buddhism in Japan, and the inherit of ancient wooden carpentry architecture code and civic engineering. Monk Kukai’s 3D mandala at Lecture Hall in To-ji, not only combines the intangible deity making techniques / tangible cultural heritage, but also represents the inter-cultural significance of religious art, graphic design and belief. To-ji temple has luckily survived from natural disasters, political instabilities and World War II demolishment in Japan. Its conservation and sustainability become even more significant.
位於古絲路兩端的古城 - 犍陀羅 (Gandhāra) 與京都，象徵著人類文化、商業與宗教的豐碩遺產。以東寺為例，在1994年名列聯合國教科文組織世界遺產遺址，東寺同時也代表著真言宗佛教在日本的開端，以及蘊藏著豐富的古代木建築技藝與都是規劃的典範。僧侶空海在東寺講堂設立的立體曼陀羅，不但結合了手工佛像製作藝術的非物質遺產 / 建築遺址的物質遺產，也代表著宗教藝術、平面設計、信仰的跨文化交流。東寺得以幸運地在天災、政變與世界大戰後完整保留，其永續保育的價值，不言而喻。
